I don't have anything to compare, but my father (who died almost 21 years ago) used to give me the most special things - French perfume when I was just hitting my teens, etc. He got so much pleasure from choosing and giving beautiful gifts and I like to remember that.Tiffanyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11536212906241844509noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4904021173466473381.post-81701245612732634042010-12-27T16:48:59.507-08:002010-12-27T16:48:59.507-08:00Kath: That's the thing with a big family, isn&...Kath: That's the thing with a big family, isn't it, especially one so spread-out -- we get to hear new stories we'd never heard about. I knew nothing of the Garfield phone although I do remember that doll that was as big as you. . .materfamiliashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16062766947897513369noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4904021173466473381.post-26317820212689056112010-12-26T11:51:52.204-08:002010-12-26T11:51:52.204-08:00:)..Wow!....this is the first time i have heard th...:)..Wow!....this is the first time i have heard this story..and i was so touched....and to think that he was making those memories happen for all of us....my chatty cathy doll comes to my mind....my big tall full size walking doll that talked and walked...:)...but most of all my garfield phone (lol) for all it signified to him....after i had moved away and broke a little bit of his heart by moving out ...a phone...for him to call me everyday..just to say hi, or to pass on the latest family gossip. ....when it rang...i always smiled....Kathrynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04668815730343049182noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4904021173466473381.post-21767744723965576502010-12-26T07:34:53.149-08:002010-12-26T07:34:53.149-08:00K: That's a wonderful gift, such a luxury -- t...K: That's a wonderful gift, such a luxury -- the common element to my gift and yours that makes them both special, I think, is the foresight, the planning, involved. To me, that indicates being held in someone's thoughts, lovingly, for an extended, focused period and I think that spills over and suffuses the gift itself. My father's glee at having managed to surprise AND delight me is part of my pleasure at the memory so many decades later.
Thanks, SL and Liz -- always happy to hear from less frequent commenters!
Jillian -- You're welcome!
Leslie: I really do -- as you do, of yours, I know.
Duchesse: It's true that I remember many of my childhood gifts because they weren't buried in a surfeit -- not having too much did make it easier for me to really appreciate what I did have.materfamiliashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16062766947897513369noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4904021173466473381.post-55592467847895277802010-12-24T11:42:16.893-08:002010-12-24T11:42:16.893-08:00A beautiful act- and a beautiful story. I'm not good at remembering gifts gone by (I'm a spoiled brat that way) but, a few years ago when S, M and my parents and I went to Quebec City for Xmas, S got me a night at the St. Antoine in the best room in the place. We ate awesome room service in front of the fireplace - and had time away from the child! Of course, my parents were complicit in the surprise. Given that we were already paying for other accommodations, it was very generous. Somehow, this doesn't have the same ring as your memorable gift experience :-)K.Linehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15350615302797686048noreply@blogger.com
